Apparently\nthere has been a 76% rise, and it\u2019s 18-34 year olds who are leading the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is honest in saying there is no clear evidence as to why this\nis, but what strikes me about these statistics is that people are leaving\nschool and continuing to read poetry into their adult life. It might be that\nthese are pupils who took English Literature up to A Level equivalent, but that\ndoesn\u2019t negate the importance of the increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, is this something we can replicate in this country? I know the\ntopic can be met with groans in UK classrooms, especially as pupils\nautomatically assume they can\u2019t \u2018do\u2019 it, or it is somehow inherently difficult.\nWhat is America doing differently then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point, I shall be clear in saying I am basing these\nremarks on this one blog article, but that doesn\u2019t mean there is not mileage in\nJones\u2019 explorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With that in mind, firstly, it seems that teachers favour \u201cfiction over literary nonfiction or\ninformational texts\u201d. This means pupils have greater exposure to poetic\nliterature, and whilst this is not the battle won, if pupils aren\u2019t exposed to\na particular type of text, they can never build a relationship with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly, \u201cover 300,000 students from\nmore than 2,300 high schools participated in\u201d external poetry programmes last\nyear. Are we utilising these resources? Moreover, one of the most popular\nprogrammes focuses on pupils creating their own poetry, which engenders\nownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most interesting point\nJones raises is the rise of the social media poet. Now that is something we can\ndefinitely use to promote the benefits and joys of poetry. In fact, we could\nencourage pupils to educate us as to who is out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, Strutting Player is using\nthis, and other research, to develop a practical approach to Poetry which will\nbe available to schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Want to know more?
