Perhaps then, if we help young people find other, more creative outlets, we might find it easier to hear what they\u2019re trying to tell us.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is easy for me to agree with this statement, having spent\n18 years teaching the Creative Arts, with one of those teaching on a\npsychiatric ward, however, there is something profound her which needs\nunpicking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I start with my own experiences in the early years of\nteaching. I had a Drama Studio, before they were repurposed for other curriculum\nareas, and I quite often spent my lunch hour there. More often than not, I was\nvisited by pupils, those pupils who felt out of place elsewhere in the school,\nand to whom the Studio was their safe space. Friendships and alliances were\nforged there which were not elsewhere in the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my own school life, I wish I had somewhere like this to\ngo, as I didn\u2019t \u2018fit in\u2019, or feel comfortable. Lenny Henry, in an article for <em>Sky News<\/em>,<a href=\"#_edn2\">[ii]<\/a>\nspeaks of the importance of the Arts \u201cfor a child\u2019s sense of inclusion\u201d, and I\nsaw that with my own eyes as a teacher, and wished for it as a pupil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the Arts are being eroded in schools, and our young people are being put under inordinate pressure by schools, which in turn are being pressured by Ofsted and the Government. The emphasis on league tables and results have led to a system wherein the test has become the important thing, as a <em>BBC News<\/em> article explores.<a href=\"#_edn3\">[iii]<\/a> \u201cSchool inspectors in England have put too much weight on tests and exam results when rating schools, Ofsted boss Amanda Spielman has admitted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can our young people flourish and grow if they are being\ngroomed for GCSE from the age of 11?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, surely 11 is too young an age for such pressure? Where\nis the time to be a child, to play, to discover who they are, if they are being\ngroomed for results, and therefore league tables from this age?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Catherine Heinemeyer states in her article for <em>The Conversation,<\/em><a href=\"#_edn4\"><strong>[iv]<\/strong><\/a> \u201cTo thrive emotionally, young people need their own time and space, that is not explicitly directed at particular outcomes. The Arts provide some of the key forums for this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without these forums, young people struggle to develop\nemotionally or to express the complicated feelings they are experiencing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With \u201ca 68% rise in rates of self-harm among girls aged 13\nto 16 since 2011\u201d,<a href=\"#_edn5\">[v]<\/a>\nsomething has got to be done to allow avenues of expression which have been\ndiminished in recent years.<br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ednref1\">[i]<\/a> Heinemeyer,\nC. \u201cMental health crisis in teens is being magnified by demise of creative\nsubjects in school. <em>The Conversation<\/em>.\nSeptember 2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a> Henry,\nL. \u201cArts vital for a child\u2019s sense of inclusion\u201d. <em>Sky News<\/em>.
