{"id":290,"date":"2018-11-12T20:36:50","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T20:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/struttingplayer.co.uk\/?p=290"},"modified":"2018-11-23T17:02:35","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T17:02:35","slug":"scene-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/struttingplayer.co.uk\/index.php\/2018\/11\/12\/scene-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Scene 7"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Teacher Torment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been silent on the subject of Ofsted since the hints at\n2019 framework because I\u2019ve been waiting to see responses from teachers and\nother press articles; in fact, the teachers that I\u2019ve spoken to have commented\nwith wry, slightly sceptical smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actually there hasn\u2019t been a great deal of buzz in the press\nsince October, but what I found, other than insights into content, has saddened\nme, deeply, not least because I was so optimistic before, \u00a0but also because findings regarding opinion of\nteachers have been published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first, Ofsted. John Roberts in an article for TES,\nOctober this year<a href=\"#_edn1\">[i]<\/a>,\nunpicked the sample of schools used to build the new framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of 23 schools sampled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>7\/12 were primary academies, 58% of the sample\nrather than the 27% nationally<\/li><li>30% were free schools, which only make up 2% of\nthe national picture<\/li><li>London and the South East were favoured above\nother regions<\/li><li>No SEND schools or PRUs<a href=\"#_edn2\">[ii]<\/a><\/li><li>4\/23 came from 2 MATs<a href=\"#_edn3\">[iii]<\/a>\nequating to 1\/6 of the study<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chief Executive of Teach First, Russell Hobby, \u201csuggested that the\ninspectorate cannot assess a school\u2019s curriculum without having an [sic]\npre-judged idea of what a good curriculum is\u201d<a href=\"#_edn4\">[iv]<\/a>\nwhich seems borne out by the sample group. I\u2019m not going to unpick these\nstatistics; I\u2019m sure you can draw your own conclusions, but I\u2019m going to remain\noptimistic that these schools actually did display the best practice, and have\nhad a positive impact on the new guidelines, rather than being another case of \u2018jobs\nfor the boys\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I then discovered an article by Jo Brighouse, also from last month<a href=\"#_edn5\">[v]<\/a>,\nwhere she comments on the impact of the dreaded phone-call, \u201cThe head confirmed\nschool would be open from 5 the next morning, and so it began: a \u2018normal\u2019 day\u2019s\nteaching.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn6\">[vi]<\/a>\nNow this isn\u2019t necessarily a comment on Ofsted itself, and this jury is still\nout on how guidelines are interpreted\u00a0 by\nschools themselves, but as Brighouse states, \u201cSensible sentiments from on high\ndon\u2019t prevent schools from being at the mercy of the individual allocated to\nthem.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn7\">[vii]<\/a>\nWe\u2019re therefore looking at the Inspector and the interpretation of the Headteacher\nin how fair the process actually is. And let\u2019s face it, who is functional at\n5am after a full day of work the day before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This all brings me to an article which upset me on a personal and\nprofessional level. Eleanor Busby, writing for the Independent<a href=\"#_edn8\">[viii]<\/a>\nreveals some uncomfortable truths about modern teaching, for those in the\nprofession at any rate, and I wonder what they\u2019re fuelled by \u2013 maybe you\u2019d like\nto comment at the end of this blog\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently the public think teachers work 5 hours fewer a week for \u00a35K\nhigher starting salary. In fact, they are working the \u201cfourth numbers of hours\nper week (50.9) out of 35 countries surveyed.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn9\">[ix]<\/a>\nTeachers are hugely committed to their profession and will go above and beyond\nto help their students achieve, but an average of 50.9 hours per week has got\nto be worrying , especially if, on top of that, schools open at 5am on Ofsted day,\nand \u201cfailure was not an option\u201d.<a href=\"#_edn10\">[x]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add to that, \u201cTeachers\u2019 average hourly pay has fallen by 15 per cent\nover the last decade. And they are working under the pressure of an ever more\npunitive accountability system where one bad year of results can destroy a\ncareer\u201d,<a href=\"#_edn11\">[xi]<\/a>\naccording to Paul Whiteman of National Association of Head Teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Sunny Varkey, founder of the Varkey Foundation, \u201c there is\nstill a mountain to climb before teachers everywhere are given the respect they\ndeserve. After all, they\u2019re responsible for shaping the future.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn12\">[xii]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With only 26% of British people encouraging children to become teachers\ncompared with 54% in India and 50% in China, I\u2019m starting to believe that Ofsted\n(\u201cthe mercy of the individual\u201d) and League Tables completely detract from the\nfact that teachers are \u201cshaping the future.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn13\">[xiii]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, are we looking at flawed system, by which so many people measure a\nteacher and school\u2019s worth? If that is the case, how do we combat it? Please\ncomment below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a lot more I could say, but I think this is an apt place to\nend.
