Obviously that\u2019s no surprise\nto those who know me, but there is a point to me declaring my undying love on\nhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, Corinne Kilvington with Theatre Space NE put on \u201cPlays\nin the Park\u201d, with the exception of last year, and I shall come onto that\nshortly. Naturally this year I went to <em>Henry\nV <\/em>in Roker Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the quality is always high, but this year it was out of\nthe park, pardon the pun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Henry V<\/em> is a\ndifficult play. The audience are actually told throughout that they\u2019re watching\na play, and are begged to use their imagination. In the age of CGI in films,\nand elaborate sets on stage, that\u2019s a heck of an obstacle to overcome, but\novercome it this troop did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further challenges involve the numerous accents required, and\nthe ability to speak fluent French, but the cast rose and surpassed these\npotential pitfalls, a credit to Corinne\u2019s eye and expectation of excellence.\nPlus, this is no static play, but the whole point of it being in an outdoor\nspace is to utilise the space. The audience follow the cast around, meaning\nthat the actors not only have lines and blocking to learn, but the rigours of\ndifferent terrain, changing in bushes, where necessary, and staying in\ncharacter while sometimes running between locations. This makes the whole thing\na physical feat for our thesps, especially, if like today, the weather threatens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have nothing but admiration for the commitment to the task\nshown by this talented bunch, and believe me, I can be very critical if chinks\nshow in something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only that, but rather brilliantly, the audience is\ndivided into English and French, and as we moved from scene to scene, there were\nEnglish routes and French routes, and at moments of great speeches, each King\nwould appeal to his segment of the audience. Audience-participation in\nShakespeare \u2013 yes, and it worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now as to why this is a project that should continue. Last\nyear, no funding came through for it, so it didn\u2019t run. We all know the Arts in\nthis country are under attack, and that Theatre is becoming an increasingly\nelite, yet here is something that is truly of the people for the people.\nTonight, there were at least 5 Primary School aged children, who stayed for the\nentire 1 hour 45 mins, watched in silence, without having to be told, and one\nlittle boy filmed it because he was so into it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m an advocate of going to the theatre, as you all know, but\nwhere that is an unobtainable thing, where do people go to introduce their\nchildren to Shakespeare, or Marlowe, or Jonson. This is perfect. The whole\nthing is sold as an adventure, which it is, as you don\u2019t know which location\nyou\u2019re moving to next, and because it\u2019s in a park, it\u2019s really intimate; you\nare right there in the moment with the actors. That is our children need to\nsee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Theatre isn\u2019t stuffy, silent, and rigid. It\u2019s exciting, even\nlife-changing. And, why not encourage our children to aspire to something that\u2019s\nright there, not miles away on a Proscenium arch, behind the fourth wall, and by\nthat I don\u2019t mean don\u2019t take your children to the theatre, do, but if you want\na truly visceral performance, then \u201cPlays in the Park\u201d is it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Arts are a vital part of human existence. They tell us\nwho we are, or allow us to find that out. They both support and challenge our\nperceptions. They are our safe spaces to explore new ideas and create new\nconcepts. They teach us empathy, tolerance, and to consider the consequences to\nour actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of this Art, I know what people\u2019s perceptions of\nShakespeare can be. And if you want to see something that breaks any idea of it\nbeing inaccessible, elitist, and out of touch, then this is it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, this is local. It showcases what we can do, and\nthat should be celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So get yourselves along to Roker Park, Saturday 20<sup>th<\/sup>\nor Sunday 21<sup>st<\/sup> July at 7pm.
